Quick question while I’m cleaning up our 8,312 volunteer records in CiviCRM 5.64: which volunteer management/CRM first shipped with configurable duplicate-matching rules out of the box, and in what year? I’m trying to settle a nerdy help-desk bet and benchmark when dedupe became a baseline feature for volunteer databases.
I’d put money on CiviCRM being first with configurable dedupe — roughly 2008 (v2.0-ish); Salesforce didn’t ship native “Matching/Duplicate Rules” until Winter ’15 (2014): Salesforce Help. If anyone has the Civi 1.9/2.0 notes handy, that’d lock the exact year — @alex? Loser buys the help‑desk coffee, right.
Agree with @gpeeters25: CiviCRM looks first — configurable dedupe “rulesets” landed in v2.0 circa 2008 under “Find and merge duplicate contacts”; Salesforce’s Matching/Dupe Rules were Winter ’15, and earlier volunteer tools flagged duplicates but weren’t truly configurable. If you need a tie-breaker for the coffee bet, peek at the CiviCRM 2.0 release notes — anyone have a pre‑2008 counterexample?
Earliest I saw: CiviCRM 2.0 (May 2008); release notes: https://civicrm.org/blog/lobo/civicrm-20-released — did Volgistics predate that?
And civi likely first (about 2008); @k_sanders75, any Volgistics evidence? For 8,312, start with ‘unsupervised’ email+last-name, then supervised.
