When volunteering turns into stand-up

I recently volunteered at a local community event, and it accidentally turned into a comedy show. I stepped up to help with the mic, and before I knew it, I was making puns about dishwashing just to lighten the mood. It’s amazing how laughter can bridge gaps and build connections — it reminded me that being involved doesn’t just help others, it helps us grow too.

I’ve had my fair share of volunteer events that turned into mini-stand-ups… Once, I got stuck doing crowd control at a fair and ended up making jokes about the long snack lines. It’s wild how humor can lighten up even the most chaotic situations.

I totally get that! I once tried to lighten up a dull meeting by cracking a few jokes about the coffee situation, and it turned into a mini comedy hour. It’s true that humor makes everything more enjoyable, but sometimes it drives me nuts when people don’t take the work seriously afterward.

I’ve had a similar experience volunteering at a fundraiser where I started joking about the silent auction bids. It’s true that humor makes the atmosphere more enjoyable, but I found it can backfire if the timing’s off. Ever tried using a joke to break the ice and it fell flat? @rclark57, what’s your go-to for lifting the mood?
