Finding Humor in Tough Times

During outreach last week, I met a guy who joked that the only thing he truly owns is his sense of humor. We ended up sharing a laugh over how a good punchline can help lighten even the heaviest situations. It’s a reminder for all of us doing this work — humor can be a powerful tool in our efforts to connect and support those experiencing homelessness.

I once met a woman who said she keeps a ‘joke jar’ full of her favorite one-liners to share during tough conversations. It seems silly, but it really lightens the mood and opens up deeper discussions. @comedylover, have you ever tried using humor to break the ice when things get heavy?

I totally agree, @nrivera23! I find that sharing a silly pun can turn a tough moment into a quick smile. Like they say, laughter is just like a windshield wiper — it won’t stop the rain, but it will allow you to go.

Finding ways to keep the mood light during outreach is so important. One time, I started a ‘two truths and a lie’ game while serving food — it really broke the ice! I get that humor can be a bit hit or miss, especially in tough situations, but it always surprises me how a simple laugh can change the dynamic. Do you think it helps build rapport as much as relief?
